I don’t quite understand why but the fact is I’m pretty dang lucky. I photograph musicians regularly for 90.3 KEXP radio, here in Seattle, which is streamed around the world. It’s a radio station that I have deep admiration and respect for. The people who work there are simply gems (special shout out to my fav peeps Jim Beckman, Janice Headley, Susan James, Kevin Cole and Kevin Suggs). It’s a joy seeing them every time I show up to photograph incredibly talented musicians. Some of these bands are legendary or feature world famous legendary musicians like Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees (performing in Tuatara) and Mike Mills of R.E.M. (performing in The Baseball Project). It’s just nuts that I’m 2 feet away from the likes of these musicians and asking them to strike certain poses for the camera all the while no one has ever dared to say, “Sure thing blondie,…and you are….?” That’s all because they’re consummate professionals and also have great respect for KEXP. Nuts I say, just nuts!!!

BRAGGART ALERT! A major accomplishment from this year that I’m just tickled about is Fitz and the Tantrums has for months and is STILL using my portrait of them on their web site, large and front and center. CRAZY! If you don’t recognize their name you likely have heard them on the radio or in retail stores because their music is everywhere and for good reason. Their live shows are not to be missed because every single band member is electric on stage and you can’t help but dance.

On to some photos – keep in mind I have anywhere from 60 seconds to 5 minutes to photograph solo artists or large bands typically in an alley behind the radio station so little ole me needs to wear my big girl pants and come up with interesting portraits (much less technically sound) FAST!

Ásgeir – Icelandic chart topper and heart throb. The Seattle female audience at his live show screamed and yelled things that made me think I was at a Justin Bieber concert they were so enamored with him.

Avi Buffalo – Another fav image of the year. This band was up for anything. I LOVE when that happens! Read about Avi here.

Band of Horses – Definitely up there in terms of some of the nicest guys on the planet. Watch and listen to this song and if you don’t get chills have someone check your pulse because you’re dead to me.

The Baseball Project – Last time I photographed them, Peter Buck of R.E.M. played. This time I was fortunate to meet Mike Mills of R.E.M.

Chelsea Wolfe – One of my favorite Nataworry photos of all 2014 was the portrait of Chelsea that I featured below.

Conor Oberst – The full set is lovely. Take a moment and do yourself a favor and give it a listen

Eels – True fact: Eels played a show with Steve Perry of Journey this year. That is NUTS given Steve’s last live performance was in 1995!!! Jump to minute 4:14 if you’re a skimmer.

La Luz – If you like surf rock you will very likely love La Luz.

Lykke Li – Check out the live KEXP videos from that day to see beautiful Lykke in action.

Posies – They have a long history and loads of followers in the great Pacific Northwest.

Rodrigo y Gabriela – I was front and center at The Triple Door for a private KEXP concert and completely blown away by their set.

Simian Mobile Disco – It’s a good thing there was no video recording of our NSFW back and forth during the shoot. But you must listen to their music!

Strand of Oaks – I think John Richards of KEXP is naming their album Heal his favorite of the year. Singer Timothy Showalter was lucky to survive a horrendous car accident in December of 2013 so this album is a very big deal to him in so many ways. He was warm and genuine to everyone at the station including me. So much so I had the urge to hug him. His silly personality shines in the portrait below.

The War on Drugs – Give Red Eyes a listen. Do it. Do it now.

Tuatara – led by Barrett Martin, former drummer of Screaming Trees. Tall drink of water that Barrett and quite the lovely man.
